VERY IMPORTANT FACTORS
TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU SELECT AND PURCHASE YOUR NATURAL STONE
Stone Is a beautiful but Imperfect material.
Natural stone is certainly one of the most long lasting and solid materials available and better than most manmade materials when it comes to durability. That's why so many ancient structures are still standing today. However, natural stone is imperfect. Its irregularities and imperfections are part of what makes stone so unique. Therefore, it is unrealistic to expect natural stone to be perfect. Small flaws, color variations, and markings are inherent in natural stone because they naturally occur as the stone forms deep in the earth over millions of years. It you want perfect color consistency and uniformity, then manmade materials may be a better choice for you.
There are specific types of stones for specific types of uses.
Some stones are better suited for countertops. Others are recommended tor high-traffic floors. And some work best for non-slip patio surfaces. Be sure to consult your contractor/installer to make sure the stone you are selecting is appropriate tor your intended use. Your Marble Of The World sales consultant can also help you select the right type of stone for your project.
Choose the right stone finish.
Stone comes in many different finishes including polished, honed, flamed, leather, saw cut, and more. Talk to your installer and your Marble Of The World sales consultant to determine which finish is best suited for your project.
Hiring a qualified fabricator/Installer Is crucial.
Go with a pro. Be sure to hire an expert STONE fabricator/installer because fabrication and installation of natural stone requires very specific knowledge, skills, tools and equipment. Marble Institute of America (MIA) is an excellent resource when selecting a fabricator/installer. Even the best stone will be damaged if improperly handled and installed. Consult your fabricator/installer BEFORE you buy your stone to be sure he/she agrees with your selection. We can provide guidance and resources to help you select a qualified fabricator/installer.
Protect your stone with a sealer.
Although we usually think of stone as hard, it is actually quite porous and can absorb spills and stains if not properly treated. Moreover, many foods, drinks, and chemicals contain acids that can harm or discolor stone surfaces. Impregnating sealers are recommended to prevent or minimize staining of natural stone. We recommend and sell professional grade Stone Tech™ products by DuPont to clean and seal your stone. Please refer to our free Stone Care Guide for additional Information.
Stone requires routine expert maintenance.
To keep your natural stone looking its best, regular maintenance by experienced stone care professionals is recommended. Stains. etching, and surface scratches can often be removed, usually bringing your product back to its original finish. Using specialized tools and techniques, expert stone maintenance, refinishing and restoration companies have the expertise to keep your stone looking great. Our experienced staff can provide you with additional information to help you find a stone care professional tor your needs.
Supervise and Inspect your project along the way.
Because natural stone colors and patterns will always vary, it is especially important that you inspect your stone carefully - before and during installation. For floor tile, be sure to place the tiles on the floor to preview colors and patterns BEFORE they are installed. And remember, don't expect every stone's color and pattern to match perfectly because irregularities are inherent in natural stone. With proper supervision and inspection you'll minimize the chances of costly mistakes and problems.
