Checkerboard patterns have been used for a  millennia and they are as relevant today as they were back then.  Over the years, this design technique has been adapted but as a trend it has never disappeared.

Whether black and white or done in colors, traditional or contemporary, rustic or urban stylish, when done correctly this pattern can work with all design styles.  Seen Right: Traditional Hall by Mountain View Photographers Mark Pinkerton

Natural stone is a terrific way to incorporate this design element into your home décor.   Choosing the right size tile is an important factor to consider; 12" X 12’ tiles work really well in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways.  This size allows for the checkerboard pattern to shine without looking too busy.

This pattern works well on a diagonal and to add interest, mix it up by using both diagonal and straight patterns for a more textural look.
