Features

Natural Stone comes in a variety of finishes: Polished, Honed, Leathered, Sawn Cut, Sandblasted, Hydro, Flamed and Split-face are just a few.

Depending on the type of stone and its intended purposes, some finishes work better than others. Although many finishes are available in natural stone, below are the most popular for the many varieties of Calacatta Marbles.

Polished

By far the most popular finish for marble countertop and flooring surfaces, a polished finish is created when a stone is buffed to create a glossy reflective surface. Depending on the stone and the desired effect, the buffing process can created different levels of polish ranging from a satin polish to the highest-level of a mirror like surface. This finish gives the stone a very sophisticated look and showcases the stone's colors and veining at its best.

Leathered

Gaining in popularity for is refined and softer look, leathering is a process of subtly texturing the stone's surface. The leathering process givens an almost velvety feel to the stone surface. It begs to be touched, adding an extra sensory element to the stones incorporation in your interior design. The soft look and feel of the finish adds a quiet elegance to any design.

Honed

A honed finish is achieved by buffing the stone to smooth in a non-glossy or matt surface. As like a polished finish, depending on the stone and the desired effect, the buffing process can created different levels of honing ranging from true matt to an almost a satin like finish. A honed finish provides warm and inviting look and feel to any room.

Bookmatched Slabs

Bookmatching occurs when the veining and movement of an individual slab is mirrored in another slab. Meaning when placed end to end, the veining and movement carries on from one slab to the other creating a continuing flow or pattern. Bookmatching occurs during the manufacturing process when alternating sides of the slab are polished. It adds expense and time to the finishing process and not all natural stone is suitable for book-matching. Natural stone with strong movement and veining are best suited for book-matching. For this reason Calacatta Marble and its variants are ideal for this type of installation. See gallery below for some examples of bookmatched natural stone.

Stone is not manufactured; it is a product of nature and as such will present with a range of color, shade, and characteristics indicative to that species of stone. A small sample serves only to indicate in a general way; the color, markings and texture usually found in your selected stone. No one samples will have all the colors and markings found in the entirety of a large stone deposit, individual slab, tile or other small sample. This is especially important to consider when selecting a Calacatta marble as its dramatic veining may not be captured in smaller sample.

Samples are a great way to narrow down product selection and focus your design goals. Once you have made your decision, careful review of individual slabs and tile crates is recommended. This will give you a deeper understanding of the aesthetic characteristic of your particular product selections.
