TECHNICAL INFORMATION

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.

As new advances in natural stone and man made products are introduced into the marketplace, Marble of the World will continue to educate, inform and support our homeowner and trade clients.

SLIP RESISTANCE: For many of our homeowner and professional clients, tile slip resistance is an important consideration when selecting flooring for their project. There are many variables that influence the performance and Coefficient of Friction (COF) of tile. COF is the resistance of an object as it dragged across a surface.  The tile’s texture, the presence of moisture, the type of material and floor slope are just a few variables that affect slip resistance.  For this reason, there are no established industry standards for slip resistance testing and the ADA does not require any minimum test results on slip resistance.

Regardless of a tile’s COF, a wet floor and a dusty or dirty floor is a slippery floor.  Therefore, precautionary measures should be taken to prevent the likelihood of a slip.  Use floor mats as needed, keep the floor clean and clear of debris and consider aftermarket chemical applications and or textured additives.  Depending upon the type of tile, man made or natural stone, there are a number of aftermarket products available to increase the slip resistance of the floor to varying degrees.
